TRAINING WITHIN THE AMBULANCE SERVICE

The training department within the Scottish Ambulance Service provide a range of development programmes for all positions, from new entrants to those wanting to become paramedics.

Ambulance Care Assistants

Ambulance Care Assistants work within the Patient Transport Service (PTS) and they are mainly concerned with routine transportation work. Although such work does not involve emergency duties, it is a crucial back bone within the ambulance service and provides opportunities to support and give assistance to those in need.

Ambulance Care Assistants take a two week training course in which they learn moving and handling techniques, first aid, basic patient skills and safe driving techniques. The course incorporates assessment and written practical examinations, successful trainees are then attached to an ambulance station where they may work under the guidance of a trained supervisor for a 3 month probationary period before working unsupervised.

Ambulance Technicians

A Trainee Ambulance Technician will attend an intensive training course, lasting 9 weeks, learning anatomy and physiology, immediate care and emergency driving skills. They spend a further period of 1 year gaining operational experience under supervision and taking examinations before qualifying.

Technician skills are extensive and include:

  • Advanced Resuscitation Procedures

  • Haemorrhage Control and Wound Care

  • Fracture Management

  • Spinal Injury Care and Immobilisation Techniques

  • Analgesia with Inhaled Entonox

  • Management of Respiratory Emergencies

  • Basic Physiological Measurements

The Technician is also trained to support the Paramedic during special interventions.

    Ambulance Paramedics

Ambulance Paramedics are specially selected and highly experienced ambulance technicians who undertake additional clinical training in life saving procedures. They will follow intensive training that lasts around ten weeks and comprises of both theory and practical clinical experience which includes several weeks in various hospital departments. Much of their training is carried out under supervision of senior doctors.

After passing a final assessment they are deemed competent and become qualified.

Ambulance Technicians and Paramedics are required to attend regular training and re-assessment and Paramedics need to re-qualify every three years.
